TripAdvisor is now the number one website in the world when it comes to online reviews and is essentially the Google of the travel/food world. TripAdvisor is one of those digital platforms that is massive, yet nobody realises its user base is as big as it is. Did you know the popular review giant has over 300 million users? 

Here’s our selection of  some the most interesting things about TripAdvisor that we were able to dig up. If we missed any, be sure to share any others in the comment section below!

1. TripAdvisor – where it all began

The platform was founded in February 2000 by Stephen Kaufer and Langley Steinert in a small office above a pizza shop called Kosta’s in Needham, Massachusetts. I wonder how high they rated the pizza?

2. It wasn’t always about reviews 

The website was originally created to be a B2B tool not a customer review site, but once the travel community took over, the site quickly evolved. Kaufer has stated that the original idea wasn’t a user generated social media site to swap reviews, “We started as a site where we were focused more on those official words from guidebooks or newspapers or magazines”

3. The TripAdvisor logo

Millions of consumers have seen the famous TripAdvisor owl logo, but how many know why one eye is red and the other is green? Well here is the answer, the two colours symbolise the way travellers choose where to go, green being where to go and red being the place to avoid.

4. TripAdvisor – a global phenomenon in every corner of the world

Did you know there are reviews on TripAdvisor for businesses in every country in the world? With the most reviewed nation being the USA, the least reviewed is Tuvalu.

5. And the most reviewed city on TripAdvisor is..

The most reviewed city in the world is London, the capital now has well over 1.8 million reviews of the city’s hotels, restaurants and attractions.

6. These days it’s bigger outside the US 

We have seen a massive growth of the global travel community. Although the sites populartiy originated in North America, the majority of the sites traffic now comes from outside of the US.

7. Not just for those looking for a place to stay

It seems that a lot of people see the site as just a platform for hotels, however there are now actually more restaurants listed on TripAdvisor than hotels.

8. TripAdvisor is no longer just about reviews.

Travellers can now use the platform as a method to compare prices, even check availability for hotel rooms and now book their stay without even leaving the site!

9. The first place to be reviewed on TripAdvisor was…

The first ever traveller review was of Captains House inn in Chatham, Massachusetts – which earned a rating of four bubbles.

10. Nearly always staying positive

The majority of the reviews on TripAdvisor are positive, the average bubble rating is more than 4 out of 5.
