What is GDPR?


GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union.

At The One Question, we’ve worked hard to prepare for GDPR. We want to ensure that we are fully compliant with all obligations and maintain our transparency about customer messaging and how we use their data.


What are consent messages?


Consent messages ensure that all customer data is collected, stored and processed according to the customers’ needs and wants.


Consent messages allow businesses to contact their customers’ within The One Question platform after collecting their details via a survey.


What does consent mean under GDPR?


The purpose of GDPR is to protect your customers’ data and ensure that companies use it in a way that offers them value. When a customer provides their email address for one purpose, it does not mean that they can be contacted for any reason – they must consent to be contacted for different reasons.


Consent should be made clear and also requires a positive opt-in, with no pre-ticked boxes – these aren’t valid under GDPR. Consent requests must be prominent, separate from any other terms and conditions, easy to understand, and user-friendly.


According to GDPR, business users must not bundle several consent messages into one – you must give granular options when possible. This allows customers to consent to each way that you intend to use their data individually. Here is a good example of granular options where it is obvious to the customer how they are or aren’t consenting to be contacted.



For example, the consent message “Do you wish to receive further communication and marketing from us via email and text message?” would not be GDPR compliant because it is asking several questions at once.


How does it work?


Consent messages are created in the platform, under settings. All consent messages are managed by each team, and therefore when you create your consent message or edit it in one team it won’t affect any consent messages in any other teams.


Consent messages must be included in all app and landing page surveys, your customers will need to provide an answer as part of completing the survey. But it does not matter what answer they choose as this will not affect them in being able to complete the survey. Consent messages are there to ask if your customers’ would like to receive further communication and marketing.


How does it benefit you?


With consent messages put in place, you will be able to store and use your customers’ data in accordance with GDPR. As a result of this, you will know exactly which customers you can contact and how.


We know that complying with GDPR may result in the list of contacts subscribed to further communication may shrink. But there is a benefit to this is as your list will consist of contacts who are expecting a reply to their feedback, as they will have opted into receive your marketing. Therefore they won’t mind receiving marketing emails and they’ll be more likely to open and read your emails resulting in your engagement rising.


How to write consent messages that are GDPR compliant
